In the year 2001 the J.L.W. Mountain Laurel Lions Club, sponsored by The Plains Lions Club, was established in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, USA, with 30 charter members ? all women. It is the first all-women Lions Club in District 14-W. The club?s initials J.L.W. represent the esteemed Past President Joseph L. Wroblewski, of Forty Fort, PA, who served as president of The International Association of Lions Clubs after his inauguration at the association?s 68th Convention held in Dallas, Texas, June 19-22, 1985. Past President Wroblewski served as a lions Club International board committee appointee for 1999-2000 and is currently serving for 2001-2002. The Officers and Members of the J.L.W. Mountain Laurel Lions Club concentration is to be involved in community projects focusing on women?s issues as well as the various facets of Lionism. Locally the J.L.W. Mountain Laurel Lions Club has made donations to St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen, The Catherine McCauley House, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and the VA Medical Center. Also, the women continue their commitment to youth by participating in the Peace Poster Program and Sight Night Program. In addition, the members accept the challenge made by Hellen Keller in her speech on June 30, 1925, to serve as ?Knights of the Blind in this crusade against darkness.? Thus, they collect used eyeglasses which are recycled for needy people, they donate to Beacon Lodge for the Blind, Leader Dogs for the Blind, Diabetes Research, Eye Research, as well as many District 14-W projects. To raise funds for the projects, the members have an annual Fall Craft Fair, and hold White Cane Days. As their motto is ?We Serve,? the J.L.W. Mountain Laurel Lions always stand ready to serve in their community and the world community whenever a need arises. Are you interested in serving your community and the global community by becoming a part of Lionism? If so, please contact us. The J.L.W. Mountain Laurel Lions would love to hear from you! Coming Together ? Sharing Together Working Together- Succeeding Together. By combining our efforts we can make a difference in the lives of others!
